Longevity & value
Paint film vs mineral finish
Design and finish guides compare short-term convenience (paint) with integral mineral finishes (plaster/fresco). Answers here reflect how Artbrick scopes that choice.
Is decorative plaster worth it if paint is cheaper upfront?
Paint wins on speed and first-cost. Plaster and fresco win when you want depth that is in the wall, longer service life between full refreshes, and a finish that repairs in-kind instead of living as a thin film. We only recommend plaster when the wall is meant to be the design — not every room needs it.
Will a plaster finish look like faux paint that peels later?
It should not. Faux painting simulates texture with paint on a dry surface. Our decorative plaster builds mineral texture and color into plaster layers. If a bid describes “plaster look” applied as ordinary paint coatings, that is a different product category than what this wing scopes.
When is standard interior paint the smarter choice?
Rentals, fast color changes, tight budgets, and rooms where you expect to repaint soon. Those jobs belong under interior painting. Choose plaster or fresco when permanence and material depth matter more than a quick film coat.
Can a plaster wall be repaired later without recoating the whole room?
Often yes when the repair uses compatible mineral material matched to the original system. Paint touch-ups hide scuffs; plaster repairs rebuild the surface. Exact repairability depends on the finish system documented in your proposal.
Fresco chemistry
Mural vs fresco — what homeowners mix up
Technique articles stress the same confusion: mural is the artwork category; fresco is pigment bonded into wet lime plaster.
If fresco pigment bonds into wet plaster, is every mural a fresco?
No. At Artbrick, fresco means pigment worked into wet lime plaster so color becomes part of the wall. Murals are designed wall/ceiling artwork that may use plaster-based methods but are not automatically buon fresco. Scope pages: fresco and murals.
Do you apply mural color as a paint film on sealed drywall?
Not as our default art-wing approach. We stay material-first — pigment and texture in prepared plaster systems where the project calls for it. Conventional wall paint after construction is a remodel service, not a substitute labeled as fresco.
What material families do you usually specify for feature walls?
Lime and mineral plasters, pigments integrated into plaster layers, and substrates prepared for that system. Exact stacks depend on light, room use, and whether the finish is fresco, mural, or decorative plaster — locked in consultation, not a website SKU list.
Why do sample boards matter if I already picked a Pinterest color?
Mineral finishes read differently under your room’s natural light than on a phone screen. Sample boards or approved design direction show movement, sheen, and texture on a real board before production — standard practice for plaster commissions.
Substrate & timing
When the wall is ready
Finish quality fails when dust, moisture, or soft drywall arrive before plaster.
What substrate problems stop plaster or fresco from starting?
Active moisture, soft or failing drywall, and unfinished construction that will still shed dust. Those conditions must be corrected first — often through our remodel wing — before art application is honest to schedule.
Can plaster coats go on while demo dust is still in the air?
No. Plaster and mural finishes wait until construction dust has settled and substrates are stable. Remodel scopes prep; art follows with a written handoff. Planning steps live in the art & plaster guides.
Who chooses the finish system — designer, homeowner, or studio?
Collaboration. You and any designer bring references and constraints; we propose a material system that fits the architecture and holds up on the wall. Samples and written scope lock the decision before production.
